In 2004 during the construction of one of the Sofia hotels, the builders found accidentally а wall from Roman times. Soon after that archaeological excavations started and the amphitheater of ancient Sofia (Serdica) was discovered.

In the ancient times, Serdica was the capital of the eastern province Inner Dacia of the Roman Empire and was a large and well-developed city, built on a Roman model with wide stone streets, forum, beautiful temples and impressive buildings with beautiful decorations. The amphitheater construction began during the reign of Emperor Diocletian and was completed by Emperor Constantine the Great.

The access to the amphitheater is free and you can visit it by entering the Arena di Serdica hotel. You could find often there different exhibitions of paintings or sculptures and other public events are held
